Arms Museum - Tourism in Vitoria-Gasteiz
In this museums you will find weapons dating from prehistoric times, the Middle Ages (found in the excavations made in the old part of Vitoria-Gasteiz), pieces from the 15th century and later, arms used in the Battle of Vitoria as well as weapons from Arabia, Central Africa and the Far East.
The building
The Museum of Arms of Álava is located in a number of a old buildings belonging to the Ajuria Enea Mansion: the front is now the exhibition area while the caretakers´ house is the administrative and technical area.
The museum
From the origins of the humanity to the beginning of the 20th century, the Museum of Arms celebrates the history and the evolution of weapons. Exhibiting arms aimed at individual and collective attack or self-defence, and with weaponry for hunting, play, skill and exhibition, each and every example on display is a chronicle of the most advanced technologies of its era. What´ s more, many are of outstanding artistic value.
While the collection chiefly encompasses European arm, it additionally boasts a selection of African and Oriental arm, together with uniforms, decorations, medals and coins.
One of the museum's particular highlights is its section devoted to the Battle of Vitoria (1813), illustrates by a wide variety of interesting materials linked directly to the event.
