Environmental renovation and extension of the Palacio de Congresos Europa (Europa Conference and Exhibition Centre)
The Centre to date
The Palacio de Congresos Europa (Europa Conference and Exhibition Centre) was built in 1989 as a building established for three integrated uses: conferences and exhibitions, social centre (both previously located in the north wing), and sports zone (located in the south wing). It is considered to be the origin of the current network of Civic Centres in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Owing to the continuous development of the Civic Centre network, some original building functions have been transferred to other centres, leaving specialisation in conferences and exhibitions at the Palacio de Congresos Europa (Europa Conference and Exhibition Centre).
From 2003 to 2011, a series of improvements and transformations were carried out in the interior of the building. The social entertainment zone and library were reconverted into a set of rooms solely dedicated to conferences and exhibitions.
In 2011, Vitoria-Gasteiz was the winner of the European Green Capital 2012 award, from which point the Palacio de Congresos Europa (Europa Conference and Exhibition Centre) was converted into the headquarters of numerous national and international environmentally-themed conferences. Equally, in 2012, with the recent completion of the renovation phase of the sports wing into an exhibition area, the Permanent Exhibition "Vitoria-Gasteiz, European Green Capital 2012" was unveiled with the purpose of communicating achievements and projects for a more sustainable city. Since then, the new 580-square-metre room has been called the Green Capital Room.
From that moment, a transformation of the entire Palacio Europa (Europa Centre) was proposed for 2014/2015, with the aim of building a more energy efficient and comfortable building, updating to current legislation and improving in respect to its functional nature.
