Development
The need to modify the hydrological conditions of the river has given rise to an ambitious scheme to develop and restore the environmental qualities of the river Zadorra, in order to prevent it from overflowing its banks and flooding large parts of the city. This is due, among other things, to the inappropriate use of its banks for urban and agricultural exploitations, together with the need to restore the bed and banks of the river in order to integrate this within the Green Belt for recreational and social use.
The Plan is being carried out in stages along a total length of 13 km of river and a surface area of 251 hectares. The result will be a large river park, which will run from one end of the city to the other, from Eskalmendi to Gobeo, favouring the integration of the river into the life of the city.
Work includes cleaning and improving bridges, the creation of alternative flood channels, the environmental restoration of areas bordering the river, the creation of pedestrian and cycle paths, the recovery of the meander (cut off today) near the Bilbao dual carriageway. Besides, an area has been prepared for ecological horticulture as an alternative to the market gardens that were located along the banks and areas adjacent to the river.
Work began in December 2003. In 2005 the first stage of the plan corresponding to the most easterly section of the river, between Gamarra bridge and the A-1 dual carriageway bridge, were completed. Between 2006 and 2007 the sections of Abetxuko, Atxa-Landaberde and Gobeo were developed and conditioned in the left bank of the Zadorra river.
