Plaza de España or Plaza Nueva - Tourism in Vitoria-Gasteiz

It was built between 1781 and 1790 under the direction of Vitoria architect, Justo Antonio de Olaguibel. The Plaza ‘Nueva’ (New Square) is part of the Neoclassical expansion of the city, when it started to grow away from the Almendra Medieval (Almond-shaped Medieval Quarter). Nowadays, the buildings in the northern part of the square house the municipal government.

Must-sees

1. Look at the city’s coat of arms on the triangular pediment of the town hall.
2. Walk through the perfect porticos, constructed with semi-circular arches supported on classical pillars.
3. Contemplate the town hall from Calle Mateo Moraza and note how it joins up with Los Arquillos.
4. Come along on a Sunday morning to have a look at the stalls of collectibles or to swap collectible cards.
