Plaza de los Fueros- Tourism in Vitoria-Gasteiz

Turismo - Plaza de los Fueros

This monumental complex was built in 1981 in homage to the Basque Charters (Fueros) and it is the work of sculptor Eduardo Chillida and the architect Peña Ganchegui. Constructed in pink granite, it has a frontón court, a space for traditional bull challenges, a bowling alley and an amphitheatre-style space with tiered seating. Designed to host rural Basque sporting events and cultural activities, it has become a local meeting and leisure place. Below, protected by a labyrinthine fortress, is Chillida's sculpture dedicated to the fueros (Basque Charters).

Must-sees

  1. Contemplate the Chillida statue named “Homenaje a los Fueros” ('Homage to the Basque Charters’) located at the junction of Calle Independencia and Calle Postas.
  2. Find the spot in the bull challenging arena which makes a great echo.
  3. Turn up in the afternoon to watch a typical Alaves bowling match in the ‘bolatoki’, where Postas and Fueros streets meet.
  4. Enjoy a display of rural sport or an open-air show during the summer months.
