Casa del Cordón Palace - Tourism in Vitoria-Gasteiz

Tourism - Casa del Cordón

This palace is one of the rare examples of Medieval stately and mercantile architecture in the Basque Country. It its interior there is a tower which, in spite of the transformations it has undergone, still retains important structural elements of the period between the 13th and 15th centuries. The building, constructed in the 15th century at the behest of Juan Sánchez de Bilbao, a rich converted Jew, has witnessed momentous events in history: the Catholic Kings and Felipe el Hermoso (Philip the Handsome) stayed here, and it is said that Adrian of Utrecht received the news of his election as Pope Adrian V1 in this very house.

Must-sees

  1. Contemplate the exquisite room containing the polychrome Gothic vault in the shape of a star.
  2. Look at the length of Franciscan cord, carved in stone and surrounding one of the entrance archways. This is what gives the building its name.
  3. Visit the permanent exhibition housed in the building and displaying pieces from a collection of popular Basque furniture, as well as paintings, sculptures and old ceramics.
  4. Enjoy some pintxos in the restaurants and taverns of Calle Cuchillería, one of the most emblematic streets of the medieval 'almond' district.
