Palace of the Marquis of Alameda - Tourism in Vitoria-Gasteiz

Turismo - Palacio del Marqués de la Alameda

This monumental house is the best exponent of domestic Baroque architecture in Vitoria. Constructed between 1731 and 1735, it is a Baroque style palace. The front of the building stands on Herrería street, facing towards the historical quarter, whereas the back of the building, on the ancient city walls, is on Siervas de Jesús street. The palace was the initiative of Bartolomé Ortiz de Urbina, the first Marquis of Alameda.

Must-sees

  1. Look at the large carved heraldic crest on the corner of the building.
  2. Notice the typically Baroque adornments on the ground floor of the building: decorative plaques, mouldings, triglyphs...
  3. Observe the curious pictorial decoration on the second floor which imitates architectural styles.
  4. Contemplate the very beautiful double-eave roof topping the building's façade.
  5. Wander around the nearby streets, in particular Correría and Zapatería.
