Escoriaza-Esquivel Palace - Tourism in Vitoria-Gasteiz
This is the most well-conserved Renaissance palace in the city. Fernán López de Escoriaza, doctor to King Henry VIII of England, and his wife Victoria de Anda y Esquivel ordered it to be built in the mid-16th century, although they never managed to see the end result as they both died beforehand. It is located on the highest part of the hill in Vitoria-Gasteiz and backs onto the ancient city walls.
Must-sees
- Go inside the palace and discover the 'patio of love'.
- Look closely at the façade:
- Busts: these are of the married couple. What is interesting is that they are at the same height, somewhat innovative at that time.
- Within the façade you can see heraldic motifs, images of heroes from ancient history, little angels, gargoyles...
- Get up close to the medieval door in the city wall.
- Notice the mural displaying "El triunfo de Vitoria" (The triumph of Vitoria) on the facade of a nearby building.
