Escoriaza-Esquivel Palace - Tourism in Vitoria-Gasteiz

Turismo - Palacio Escoriaza-Esquivel

This is the most well-conserved Renaissance palace in the city. Fernán López de Escoriaza, doctor to King Henry VIII of England, and his wife Victoria de Anda y Esquivel ordered it to be built in the mid-16th century, although they never managed to see the end result as they both died beforehand. It is located on the highest part of the hill in Vitoria-Gasteiz and backs onto the ancient city walls.

Must-sees

  1. Go inside the palace and discover the 'patio of love'.
  2. Look closely at the façade:
    • Busts: these are of the married couple. What is interesting is that they are at the same height, somewhat innovative at that time.
    • Within the façade you can see heraldic motifs, images of heroes from ancient history, little angels, gargoyles...
  3. Get up close to the medieval door in the city wall.
  4. Notice the mural displaying "El triunfo de Vitoria" (The triumph of Vitoria) on the facade of a nearby building.
