Environmental Studies Centre - The Green Infrastructure of Vitoria-Gasteiz
The Urban Green Infrastructure of Vitoria-Gasteiz is made up of the Green Belt, parks and gardens, tree-lined avenues, green sports areas, urban horticultural gardens, the streams that cross the city, the edges and central reservations of roadways, residual and transitional green areas and other, less conventional elements such as vacant plots and the green facades and roofs.
Urban green spaces are essential for the city to operate correctly. Besides their aesthetic and ornamental function and as well as being spaces for leisure pursuits and social relations, they play a fundamental role in improving the environmental quality of the urban milieu, contributing to an improvement in the general habitability of the cities and the health and well-being of their inhabitants.
With the aim of improving the ecological, environmental and social functions of the green spaces of the city, Vitoria-Gasteiz City Hall has approved and put into motion its Urban Green Infrastructure Strategy. This plan defines a system of the main spaces in which action is to be taken and a set of projects and activities, with the aim of increasing the urban biodiversity (increasing the bush stratum, creating ponds, bird refuges, etc.), improving the permeability and water drainage networks (through permeable pavements, creating rain gardens, etc.), improving capture of CO2 and other air pollutants (with tree plantings), etc.
