Accessibility on guided tours - Tourism in Vitoria-Gasteiz

A sign language interpreter provides explanations during a guided tour of the Jardín de la Muralla

The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council is committed to accessibility and provides various resources to enhance the participation of individuals with disabilities in the guided tours offered by the Tourist Office.

Accessibility for people with reduced mobility

Most guided tours offered by the Tourist Office are fully accessible. The most popular route, which takes visitors around the main sites of the Medieval Quarter, can be adapted to guarantee access and comfort for people with reduced mobility.

In cases where tours or routes are not accessible to wheelchair users, joëlette wheelchairs are available to assist them in overcoming barriers such as stairs and uneven terrain. Specially trained guides accompany users at all times to ensure their safety and comfort. This support is available for adults and children alike, allowing families to enjoy the tour together without barriers.

Joëlette chair services can be requested from the Tourist Office at least two weeks in advance (for shorter notice, please check availability). Users only pay the cost of the tour.

Ataria, the Salburua Wetlands Interpretation Centre, provides individuals with mobility challenges the opportunity to rent mobility scooters to explore the wetlands.

Accessibility for people with visual impairment

When a person with impaired vision participates in a tour, attention is paid to providing explanations in a more descriptive manner during the visits.

Individuals who are blind can request the use of a guide bar (a physical link between the guide and the blind person, allowing them to perceive changes in level and obstacles on the route through touch) or a tandem bicycle for guided bicycle tours. In both cases, specialised guides accompany the visitors along the entire route, providing detailed descriptions of the surroundings.

This service can be requested from the Tourist Office at least two weeks in advance (for shorter notice, please check availability). Users only pay the cost of the tour.

Accessibility for people with hearing impairment

Tours can also be arranged for individuals with hearing impairment. These tours are for groups and must be booked at least two weeks in advance to ensure a sign language interpreter is available. Users only pay the cost of the tour.

Services offered by companies

Local tour guide companies are also adapting to the needs of accessible or inclusive tourism. We recommend contacting them beforehand to inquire about their specific services and ensure the best experience.
