You should not end your visit to the city without trying the excellent wine
of the Rioja Alavesa. In this province, winemaking started well before the
Roman occupation. The Rioja Alavesa has 12,000 hectares of vineyards and
its wines, which are produced under the control of the Rioja Appellation
d’Origine, enjoy a well-deserved international prestige.
A Wine Route of theRioja Alavesa, which
will allow visitors to explore medieval wine cellars, visit ultra-modern
winemaking installations, take part in adventure sports in the area, stay
at hotels surrounded by vineyards and take part in a great number of cultural
and leisure activities, is currently in preparation.
Moreover, every year, winemakers come to the city in December on
the day of the Blessed Virgin to show off their best wines at the
International Wine Festival Ardoaraba. Five
large marquees are set up in the centre the city, enabling visitors
to try the best wines of the Rioja Alavesa and a succulent range
of “pintxos” or “tapas”. This fair also
includes wine tasting sessions, food and wine combinations and
talks about the cultural of wine.
