For centuries, Vitoria-Gasteiz was a major reference point for pilgrims
travelling to Santiago de Compostela during their journey through this
province.
There are many traces of the pilgrims who passed through the city,
ranging from place names to hospitals and the many representations
of the apostle in a number of churches in Vitoria.
Here are a few of them:
- The chapel of Santiago: located inside the Cathedral
of Santa María. This 15th-century chapel was the place where
pilgrims prayed when they arrived at the city. We can see the image
of Santiago on horseback in its keystone.
- In the often-overlooked street of Nuestra
Señora del Cabello you
can find the old pilgrims’ hospital, built in the 14th century. Eventually
its name was changed to the hospital “de Santiago de la Plaza”.
- We also suggest that you take a walk to the Basilica of Armentia,
which was a milestone on the Way of St James. It is also a fine example
of Romanesque architecture in the Basque country.
