Vitoria-Gasteiz is determined to make progress towards the sustainable city model. This determination has been recognised in a large number of national and international prizes.

Some of the awards are described below:

2005:	The UNO invited the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz to take part in World Environment Day in San Francisco and in the “Green cities” declaration.
2005:	Special prize at the third Energy Awards organised by EUDEL and the Basque Energy Board-EVE (presented on June 17).
2004:	Sustainable Urban Development Prize granted by the Madrid Real Estate Fair to the municipal company Ensanche 21 (presented on May 26).
2003:	Green Flag-Sustainable City Prize for the eighth consecutive year for the city's waste management policies.
2003:	Green Flag-Sustainable City Prize for the seventh consecutive year.
2002:	Second Prize granted by the Spanish Waste Club to municipalities of more than 50,000 inhabitants, who have obtained the best results in their sustainability policies.
2002:	Green Flag-Sustainable City Prize for the sixth consecutive year.
2001:	Prize granted by the second Childhood Rights and Municipal Policy competition, for the Children's Participation and Family Mediation programmes, organised by the FEMP and the Spanish UNICEF Committee. This prize was presented in November.
2001:	Prize granted by the first Childhood Rights and Municipal Policy competition, for the Children's Participation and Family Mediation programmes, organised by the FEMP and the Spanish UNICEF Committee.
2000:	Honourable mention in the Green Flag–Sustainable City Prize. This prize was presented in December.
2000:	Green Flag-Sustainable City Prize for the fourth consecutive year.
2000:	The fifth National Environment Conference presented Vitoria-Gasteiz with the National Environmental Education Award.
1999:	The UNO selected the Green Ring of Vitoria-Gasteiz from among the 100 best projects in the world at the Third International Competition of Good Practices.
1999:	City, Urban development and Ecology Prize granted by the Vasco-Navarra group of Urban Development Architects.
1999:	Green Flag-Sustainable City Prize granted by the Association of Independent Consumers and presented in December by the Health Minister, Romay Becaría.
1999:	Prize "For the ecological municipality 1999" (shared with Calviá on Majorca), granted by the newspaper Expansión and Arthur Andersen. This award is included within the Environment and Business prizes organised jointly by the aforementioned companies in collaboration with the IESA of Barcelona. The Minister for the Environment, Isabel Tocino, awarded the Prize on March 18.
1998:	On the occasion of the Iberflora 98 trade fair, the Institute of Gardening Studies and Landscape Art awarded the Town Hall of Vitoria-Gasteiz an honourable mention in recognition of its work in the field of urban landscape and landscaped areas.
1998:	"Ecological Street Cleaner" prize for the cleanest city (second consecutive year), granted by the Association of Independent Consumers and presented by the Health Minister, Romay Becaría.
1998:	The fourth National Environment Conference granted the Town Hall an honourable mention as Sustainable City.
1997:	On December 23, the Basque Government declared the Historical Quarter of Vitoria-Gasteiz to be a national monument.
1997:	"Ecological Street Cleaner" prize for the cleanest city, granted by the Association of Independent Consumers and presented in October of that year by the Health Minister, Romay Becaría.
1997:	8th Tourist Promotion Prize “Alimara” for the Tourist Guide “Vitoria-Gasteiz in all senses” published by the Town Hall. Received on April 25. Organised by the Tourism and Catering Centre of Barcelona.
1996:	European Level Sustainable City model. Second Conference of Sustainable Cities held in Lisbon in October.
1996:	The civic centres of Vitoria-Gasteiz, chosen as a model in the European Forum of Urban Safety held in La Villette (Paris) in October.
1996:	“Royal Foundation of Toledo Awards”, for the Special Plan of Integrated Rehabilitation of the Medieval Centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz, for the success of the set of actions undertaken in the rehabilitation of the medieval quarter of the city.
1996:	City chosen as an example at a state level to speak about its environmental experience at the Habitat II summit held in Istanbul in June.
1994:	Silver Plate for work in the field of Sports. Received on December 21 of that year. Granted by the Council for Sports of the Ministry of Education.
1994:	Pink Triangle Prize for the mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz for being the first public authority to open a Civil Marriage Registry both for heterosexual and homosexual couples. Presented on June 21, 1994.  Organised by the Gays and Lesbians Association of Madrid.
1993:	Sport Quality 92 Prize.  Received on May 21 1993.
1993:	City of Barcelona Sports Prize.
1993:	Finalist in the Prince of Asturias Award Scheme for Sports.
1992:	Prize for Basque Sports 1991.  Presented by the President of the Basque Government on March 12 1992. Organised by the Department of Culture of the Basque Government.
1991:	Finalist in the Prince of Asturias Award Scheme for Sports.
1982:	Europa Nostra award for the rehabilitation of the Historical Quarter of the city.
