A piece of information can be considered to be useful only when it offers quality, a reliable source and significance and, what is not less important, is accessible to both specialists and the man or woman in the street. For all these reasons, the appropriate documentary treatment of data represents an essential aspect with a view to ensuring the operability of an Environmental Information System. In this way, by providing information to specialists or members of the public interested in these matters, improvements can be made in the organisation of data and the amortisation of investments is made easier.
For this reason, data and documents of interest are subjected to a detailed cataloguing process. Specialists responsible for the System keep a complete Catalogue of the environmental documentation available in the SIAM.

This catalogue, which is accessible via the municipal Intranet and Internet, supports this kind of location, description and access to environmental information which, under the widest range of formats, is generated on a daily basis by the different departments and services under the Environment Department. In this way, any user interested in a specific issue can access a screen and from this, by specifying a series of criteria, establish a specific search application.
In accordance with the attributes included in the catalogue, the search results are shown on screen, and it is possible to access the complete description of the document or material in question, and in the vast majority of cases, if this is in the correct format, even the resource itself.
