Before work began to recover and develop the final section of the river Alegrķa, it was a narrow, rectilinear waterway, the result of channelling work done in the seventies. Moreover, the bank nearest the city came within the boundaries of an industrial estate and was in a severe state of deterioration and neglect, with waste dumps, unauthorised market gardens, and so on.
The work done to develop this area, which comes within a broader project to prevent flooding, has been carried out along a section of the river measuring 1.5 km and covering an area of 15 hectares. This work has involved a major transformation of the final stretch of the river Alegrķa, creating a new park or promenade between the periurban park of Salburua and the future river park of the Zadorra.
The river Alegrķa walkway, which marks the boundaries of the town, has been designed in an attempt to create a transition between the urban environment and the surrounding countryside. In this way, the creation of two walkways at different heights, the choice of different materials according to their surroundings and the careful restoration of the planting have been used to resolve the transition between two very different environments along a narrow strip of land.
